Ellie

Jafar avoids me over the next few days. Well, kind of. He’s there but doesn’t speak to me. Each night I lock myself in the guest room only to find myself in his bed in the morning. The nightmares have all but stopped and I know it’s because I sleep better with him at my side. It scares the shit out of me. I’m becoming too dependent on him. What happens when he tires of me or when I leave?

I’m standing at the island in the kitchen when Razoul enters the house.

“Are you up for a visitor, ma’am?”

Visitor? I’m not expecting anyone…

“Who is it?”

“I believe her name is Gemma.”

“Gemma is here? But, how?”

He gives me a small smile. “I’m sure you can guess. Shall I let her in?”

I look down. I’m wearing one of the new maternity shirts Jafar bought me and leggings. It’ll have to be good enough.

“Yeah, that’s fine. And thank you.”

He disappears and a moment later Gemma enters the room. I cross the floor and we throw our arms around each other, both crying. She pulls back, cupping my face.

“I was so worried when you left and then I couldn’t get ahold of you.”

“I know. I’m sorry about that. I just had to get away.”

“Mr. Jafar explained everything.” She gives me a look. “He told me what he said when he sent you away, and how hurt you were by his actions. How are you?”

I’m shocked that he told her.

“I’m better now. Well, that’s not entirely true. I was living in Baton Rouge, and I was happy there. Being back here is a lot, especially since Al is still out there somewhere.”

She shakes her head. “I should have tried harder to stop you from leaving that night.”

“This isn’t your fault. It’s Al’s. He’s the monster.”

She hugs me again. “I’m just so glad you’re back.”

Our bodies touch this time, and she glances down. Her eyes widen.

“Ellie, my mother told me a long time ago to never ask a lady if she’s expecting. But…are you?”

“I am.”

“Is it… was it when…” She pales, as if she can’t bear to finish the sentence.

“It’s Jafar’s baby.”

She reaches out, touching my stomach. “I wondered if there was something going on. He was always so defensive when it came to you.”

“You’re not shocked?”

“Honey, I was a pop star in the 80s. Nothing can shock me.”

That makes me laugh. “True. I guess I just expected you to be shocked, or maybe even judge me for helping a married man cheat.”

“Does he make you happy?”

It’s so complicated between us, but I nod.

“Then screw what anyone else thinks. Now, would you like to go to lunch so you can tell me what you’ve been up to for the last six months?”

“I’d like that.”

Razoul is waiting at the elevator, and says he’ll drive us. In the SUV, Gemma launches into everything that I’ve missed.

“The gala was an enormous success, but that didn’t really surprise anyone.” She touches my arm. “I’m just sorry you weren’t there.”
